Richard Mosse: The Impossible Image

Artist and photographer Richard Mosse reveals the stories behind the making of his latest film, 'The Enclave' (2013), in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which will be shown in the Irish Pavilion at this year's 55th Venice Biennale.

"Από τα χαράματα ώς το δειλινό,μιά λεοπάρδαλη,στα τελευταία χρόνια του δωδεκάτου αιώνα,κοίταγε κάτι σανίδες,κάτι σιδερένιες βέργες,γυναίκες και άνδρες που αναλλάσσονταν,μιά μάνδρα ίσως,με ξεραμένα φύλλα.
Δεν ήξερε,δεν μπορούσε να ξέρει πως λαχταρούσε αγάπη και αγριότητα,φλογερό πόθο να σκίσει σάρκες και αέρα γεμάτο μυρωδιά ελαφιού.Μα πάλι κάτι μέσα της τινάζονταν και της μίλησε σ'ένα όνειρο ο Θεός :
" Zείς και θα πεθάνεις μέσα σ'αυτή τη φυλακή,γιά να σε κοιτάξει ορισμένες φορές ένας άνθρωπος που ξέρω,και να μή σε ξεχάσει και να βάλει τη μορφή σου και το σύμβολό σου σ'ένα ποίημα,που κατέχει μιά συγκεκριμένη θέση στο σχέδιο του σύμπαντος.Υποφέρεις από την αιχμαλωσία,όμως θα δώσεις μιά λέξη στο ποίημα ."
Ο Θεός ,στο όνειρο, φώτισε το κτήνος,και το ζώο κατάλαβε και υποτάχθηκε στη μοίρα του.
Μά όταν ξύπνησε,δεν της είχε μείνει παρά μιά σκοτεινή υποταγή,
μιά θαρραλέα άγνοια,
γιατί ο μηχανισμός του κόσμου είναι υπερβολικά πολύπλοκος γιά την απλοικότητα του θηρίου.

Χρόνια αργότερα ο Ντάντε πέθαινε στη Ραβένα,το ίδιο αδικαίωτος και το ίδιο μόνος,όπως οποιοσδήποτε άλλος άνθρωπος. Σ'ένα όνειρο,ο Θεός τού αποκάλυψε τον μυστικό προορισμό της ζωής και του έργου του.Ο Ντάντε,κατάπληκτος, έμαθε επιτέλους το ποιός ήταν και τι ήταν και δόξασε γιά τις δυστυχίες του.
Η παράδοση αναφέρει ότι,ξυπνώντας,είχε την αίσθηση πως δέχθηκε και έχασε μιά απέραντη ανακάλυψη,κάτι που δεν θα μπορούσε ποτέ να ξαναβρεί,ούτε να ξαναδεί έστω και γιά μιά στιγμή,
γιατί ο μηχανισμός του κόσμου είναι υπερβολικά πολύπλοκος γιά την απλοικότητα των ανθρώπων.
."

On the day of your scan I make a soup
to wean us from meat. Beans soak and blanch
an hour while I slit open the cell-
ophane wrap on the celery, chopping
the ribs into small pieces, the size
of the stones that follow an avalanche.
Carrots sliced into see-through orange mem-
branes, others hacked into jagged boulders, bi-
sected as though by the pressure of shift-
ing plates. Onions, at knifepoint, suppurate
and toss themselves into the hot oil. What
is left? two blind see-no-evil potatoes.
Sweet herbs; I pull apart ovate leaves
of basil and sweet marjorum. Red kidney
beans slip out of their bladder skins, rubbing
against the Great Limas. Together,
they give off a kind of scum which keeps down
the foaming boil: instead it heaves and
swells, trembling like a bosom, but does not
spill out. Thank God for scum! I rinse my knife,
watching its gleaming edge rotate under
the water; now there is only the wait.
